Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday cut short his visit to his parliamentary constituency in Amethi and rushed to Assam, where over 100 people died in a boat tragedy in Brahmaputra.
The Congress leader, who had to fly from Amethi for Delhi in the evening, winded up his three-day visit and left for Assam, Congress sources said.
The review meeting of the Jagdishpur assembly segment, which was scheduled to start around 11 am, was advanced and got underway at 9 am. Gandhi left for the Fursatganj airstrip after that, sources said.
Gandhi had arrived in Amethi on April 30 for the first time after the Congress's debacle in the UP polls to review the party's performance.
Meanwhile, Parliament on Wednesday mourned the boat tragedy in Assam's Dhubri district.
As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, Speaker Meira Kumar made an obituary reference to the victims of the boat tragedy that happened on Monday.
