Pvt members bill in RS for protection to whistleblowers

Measures for providing protection to whistleblowers from civil or criminal liability were among the seven private members' bills introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

The 'Whistleblowers (Protection in Public Interest Disclosures) Bill, 2010, piloted by Vijay Darda of the Congress seeks to provide protection from criminal or civil liability, departmental inquiry, demotion and harassment of whistleblowers.

The bill seeks to protect persons who bring to light specific instances of illegality, criminality, corruption, miscarriage of justice, any danger to public health and safety in any Government, public or private enterprise to an authority designated for the purposes.

Darda introduced another bill for regulating and controlling pathological laboratories and clinics by making their registration compulsory.

The Pathological Laboratories and Clinics Bill, 2010, also seeks to provide norms and standards for setting up a pathological laboratory or a clinic.

The other private members' bills related to catering to the needs of woman farmers and protecting their legitimate needs, and eradicating manual scavenging.
