Over 200 students from Bahrain face expulsion from the University of Pune for allegedly overstaying in India. The students face action unless they pay a fine of $200 each, the Al Wefaq National Islamic Society said.

The society has now taken up the case with Indian Ambassador Balakrishna Shetty."This is the first time that the matter has been brought to our attention," Shetty was quoted as saying in Gulf Daily News.

"We do not understand why the students face expulsion or why they are being fined. I cannot comment on it until we carry out an investigation," the Indian envoy said.

"I have urged the society to advise the students to approach the Bahrain Consulate in Mumbai or the Bahrain Embassy in Delhi," Shetty said.
