6,500 families evacuated in Pune

Around 6,500 families were evacuated to safer places with the help of army personnel after many areas in the city and rural parts were inundated by waters from rivers Mula and Mutha in Pune district on Tuesday.

While 5,500 families were shifted from Pune city, as many as 1,000 families were shifted to safer places from rural areas of the district, Resident Deputy Collector Suhas Divse told PTI in Pune.

Help of the army personnel had been sought to evacuate affected families, he said, adding that two army units were engaged in Pune city while another two were deployed in adjoining Pimpri-Chinchwad.

However, the situation had improved a great deal in these localities by 6 pm and the water-level had come down to less than three-feet, the resident deputy collector said.
