Baramulla: No let-up in protests

One person was injured on Sunday when police fired rubber bullets following clashes between protestors and security forces for the second day in north Kashmir Baramulla and adjoining Sopore towns.

A senior police officer said youth took to streets in the Baramulla town, 54 km from Srinagar, this morning and clashed with police and paramilitary central reserve police force (CRPF) troopers who intervened to restore order in the town where shops and businesses remained shut for the second day.

An unruly mob attacked the local police station with stones prompting police to fire warning shots and use tear smoke and batons.

However, as the situation deteriorated and pelting intensified police fired rubber bullets one of which hit a youth in the eye.
Identified as Mohammad Ishaq Lone, he was rushed to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

Police was also trying to disperse stone-pelting youth in the adjoining Sopore town where trouble erupted as protestors demanding the release of some arrested persons clashed with the security forces. Security forces were responding by firing teargas and using baton charges to quell the violence.

Police had picked up some youth who they say are involved in the pelting incidents in the twin towns in past two days.
