Protests against Mamata for delay in Park Street rape case

Intellectuals joined by Congress leaders on Tuesday protested the 'failure' of the Mamata Banerjee government to resolve the Park Street rape case, which took place exactly a year ago, with a procession taken out by them stopped by the police.

The protestors held placards reading 'Justice delayed is justice denied', 'Government answer why chargesheet has not been filed', 'Delhi rape case trial has begun, why not Park Street rape case even after one year?'

The procession, which was headed for the Park Street police station, was stopped by the police at the Chowringee crossing drawing criticism from the protestors.

West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee chief Pradip Bhattacharya slammed the state government for 'undemocratic steps' to stop the procession though it was a scheduled one.

"It is condemnable that the state government has not been able to arrest the main accused in the rape case even after one year after the incident," Bhattacharya told reporters.

Painter Samir Aich, who recently parted ways with the Trinamool Congress chief after being closely involved in the party's land movement alleged, "It is sheer dilly dallying by the government that trial in the case is yet to begin."

The police said that the protestors submitted a memorandum to the Park Street police station demanding immediate arrest of the main accused and framing of the chargesheet in the case.
