A suspected terrorist from the Hizbul Mujahideen, who was recently arrested by the Delhi police, had planned a fidayeen strike in the city, sources in the police have revealed.
Liaqat Ali, the alleged operative, was on his way to Delhi in a train when he was arrested from Gorakhpur, police sources said.
He was produced in a court on Thursday which sent him to police custody for 15 days.
Sources claimed that Liaqat told them that some weapons were kept for him in a guest house in a Central Delhi locality.
The suspected terrorist, who has been remanded to police custody for 15 days, was part of a team that was carrying out a reconnaissance in certain localities in Delhi.
The Delhi police believe that a team of three or four militants had planned out the logistics and other details to carry out a major strike.
The suspected militant was arrested by a team of the Delhi Police, following an intelligence input about his whereabouts.
“We are in the process of questioning him. We are also looking for the others involved in the plot. It appears they were planning to carry out a fidayeen strike during Holi,” said a police official.
He added, “We have found material which would have been used in the attack”.
According to sources, the terrorists were planning to target crowded market areas in Old Delhi.
