PM discusses Kashmir situation with president

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday and discussed the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir besides other issues.

The meeting comes a day after Singh unveiled a major initiative to deal with the unrest in Kashmir saying the Centre is willing to consider autonomy for the state within the ambit of the Constitution.

Singh is understood have apprised her of his talks with various political leaders from the state on the present situation in the Kashmir Valley, which witnessed a spate of violence over the last two months claiming nearly 50 lives.

The two leaders met for nearly 30 minutes during which they discussed the ongoing Parliament session and issues relating to agriculture including dry land farming, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said.

They also discussed internal security matters and various other issues of national and international importance, the spokesperson said.
