Canadian legislator Pat Martin has offered up one of the most original excuses ever heard for hurriedly running out of the House of Commons during a vote, his new cheap pair of underpants was too tight.

Martin, who belongs to the official opposition New Democrats, bolted as members of Parliament began to rise one by one to vote. He later blamed his departure on an unwise purchase at a local store.

"They had men's underwear on for half price and I bought a bunch that was clearly too small for me. I find it difficult to sit for any length of time," he told the chamber to guffaws and applause from fellow legislators.

Japan forms tourism 'ninja council'

Japan is hoping to boost tourism by using one of the most famous figures from its history -- the ninja.

A "ninja council" has been set up by mayors and governors from around the country, who ditched their office wear in favour of ninja gear to launch the new initiative, the Japan Times reports.

Officials are hoping that global interest in the mysterious figures will encourage people to visit Japan. It's a "subject that always comes up whenever we go abroad to promote tourism," says Hiroshi Mizohata, former head Japan's Tourism Agency.

The council wants local authorities and tourism bodies to put the ninja front and centre - a position the stealth assassins historically tried to avoid, the report points out. It will also be holding ninja-related events.

House for sale in Indonesia - with free wife

An advert for a house in Indonesia has gone viral online after the woman selling it offered to throw in an unusual extra feature for free - her hand in marriage.

The Internet ad reads for the most part like a regular house listing, saying that the single-storey property has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a parking space and a fish pond.

But it also proposes to buyers a "rare offer" - "when you buy this house, you can ask the owner to marry you", alongside a picture of Wina Lia, a 40-year-old widow and beauty salon owner, leaning against a car in front of the house.
