180 dead, 1 crore affected as rains lash West Bengal, Gujarat, Rajasthan

More than 180 people have lost their lives and nearly one crore people were affected in floods in West Bengal, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Odisha.

Bengal

The number of deaths is the highest in West Bengal where 70 people have died so far in flood-related incidents including lightning strikes, wall collapse, electrocution, drowning and snake-bites.

A total of 2,213 relief camps have been set up for about 50 lakh affected people and 234 boats deployed for rescue and relief operations.

A compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to the families of those killed in the floods. Those who have lost limbs will be given Rs 2 lakh and Rs 60,000 for those sustaining other injuries. A compensation of Rs 12,000 will be given to those with slight injuries, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced at North 24 Parganas district’s Ashoknagar, where a storm had triggered massive damage last week.

Banerjee, who personally monitored the flood situation at the state secretariat Nabanna, distributed relief material in Ashokenagar.

Gujarat

In Gujarat, there have been no rains for the last six days and waters have largely receded. The total deaths from flood-related incidents in 14 districts stand at 71.

More than 10 lakh food packets have been airdropped or distributed to flood victims.

Army troops from the Southern Command and South Western Command undertook the rescue operations.

The Indian Air Force conducted 199 sorties on Saturday, rescuing nine people and dropped 210,000 food packets. Air force choppers were on standby on Sunday. In Shervo village, nearly 50 km north of Bhuj, after the lone connecting road was cut off by flood waters, soldiers and Gujarat Police rescued around 200 people.

Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, 38 deaths have been reported during the past few days owing to very heavy rainfall and floods in many parts of the state. More than 630 people have been rescued from various districts in Rajasthan. Relief materials have been distributed to the affected population.

Odisha

In Odisha, 4,80,399 people were affected by the floods which so far claimed five lives. 1574 peoples have been evacuated to safer places by rescue and relief teams. 

even relief camps have been set up and 132 boats pressed into service for rescue operations. The Union Home Minister Singh spoke to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and reviewed the flood situation in the state.

Manipur

The heavy rains caused a landslide in Manipur, killing 21 people. Officials said teams from the National Disaster Management Response Force and the army had been sent on search and rescue operations but roads and bridges had been washed away, making it difficult to reach stranded survivors.
