With 127 mm of rain, Monday was Mumbai's wettest July day in 3 years

Monday was Mumbai’s wettest July day in three years. The 126.6 mm rainfall that the city received in the 12-hour period from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm on Monday exceeded the 114.5 mm it got on July 30, 2016, and July 21, 2015’s meagre record of 61 mm.

Officials from the Indian Meteorological Department have warned Mumbaikars of heavy downpour for Tuesday too.

The rain also helped bring down temperatures, which fell 2 degree Celsius below normal.

Civic officials also announced that the lakes have already received 68 per cent of the total rainfall required to ensure round-the-year water supply.

However, the rain also brought traffic to a halt on major routes, leading to traffic snarls.

Among the worst hit areas was the suburban Andheri subway, which had to be shut for traffic after it flooded. This led to congestion at several other points that connect the suburbs’ east and west.

There was waterlogging reported at Linking Road in Bandra, SV Road and VM Road, while the Santacruz Chembur Link Road and the Western Express Highway reported slow moving traffic all through the day, especially in the evening.
