In a rare gesture, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto personally drove Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a restaurant in New Mexico for a vegetarian fare.

The dinner was part of the working visit of Prime Minister Modi which was originally scheduled to be held at the Mexican President's official residence.

The two world leaders were later seen 'bonding over bean tacos'.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted: "Bonding over bean tacos! President @EPN and PM @narendramodi share a meal."

Earlier, Nieto also took to Twitter to welcome Modi, who flew in from Washington for a brief visit to Mexico.

"Its an honour to welcome you to our country, PM @narendramodi. I trust that your stay in @Mexico will be both productive and pleasant," he wrote.

Located in the well-heeled and leafy district of Polanco, Quintonil restaurant focuses on fresh seasonal ingredients, forgotten herbs and grains, and indigenous produce.

It presents probably the best overall menu of modern Mexican cuisine.

Though meat is a feature on the tasting menu, the restaurant aims to highlight the value of fruit and vegetables, as much for their flavour as for their nutritional value.
