PHOTOS: Heavy rains leave Nagpur in a watery mess

4 people have died owing to the floods; fire brigade officials have been called in to pump out water from the roads.

Incessant rains in Nagpur and the adjoining area for the past 24 hours has hit normal life, crippling traffic and inundating several low-lying areas in northern and eastern parts, officials said.

Rainwater flooded many low lying areas in north and eastern part of the city, leading to several traffic disruptions.

Both Nag and Pivli rivers were overflowing and the fire brigade was summoned at many places to pump out water, fire officials said.

The Ambjhari lake in the south-western part of the city was overflowing and a large number of enthusiasts had gathered there to enjoy its beauty.

In Wardha, about 31 gates of Upper Wardha irrigation Dam were opened to release the water, official sources said.

According to Regional Meteorological Centre, the rains or thunder showers may continue throughout the region for three to four days. Nagpur city has recorded 790.07 mm of rains during the season while Nagpur district received 666.8 mm.

Meanwhile, three persons including a three-year-old were swept away in an overflowing river in the city. Rekha Neware, three-year-old Yesh Neware from Kasturba Nagar, and Krishna Chapke were swept away in Mahadula area in Nagpur rural, as per a release from the District Collector’s office.

In another incident, 32-year-old Sandeep Dandre was killed after his house collapsed in Kamleshwar area, it said.

Seven persons were rescued by an Indian Air Force helicopter in the Kamptee-Saoner Road area, about 15 kilometre from Nagpur.

The district collector requested the IAF, which pressed into service a helicopter piloted by Wing Commander V S Kale, a defence spokesperson said.
