Indian students won two gold and three bronze medals at the 37th International Physics Olympiad, which concluded in Singapore, National Science Olympiad coordinator Dr Vijay Singh of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education said on Tuesday.
Raghu Mahajan of Chandigarh and Mehul Deepak Tikekar of Mumbai were the winners of gold medals while Divyanshu Jha of Patna, Neha Jayesh Rambhia of Mumbai and Harish Ravi of Bangalore bagged the bronze medals, he told PTI. All five students are students of the Indian Institute of Technology.
A total of 93 countries had registered in this prestigious world event, of which only 6 nations fared better than India in terms of medals tally, Singh said.
The team, led by Prof Charudatt Kadolkar from IIT, Guwahati and Prof B N Chandrika from the VVSFC College of Women, Bangalore, was trained at the HBCSE for about 2 weeks prior to their departure for the International event.
The International Physics Olympiad started in the year 1967. India has been participating in the event since 1998.
