The West Bengal police on Tuesday arrested People's Committee against Police Atrocities leader Sameer Mahato, a key accused in the May 28 Gyaneshwari Express derailment. The Mumbai-bound train was derailed after some fishplates were reportedly removed from the tracks, and a goods train collided with some bogies of the derailed train, on May 28.

As many as 148 people were killed and hundreds injured in the mishap.

Mahato is scheduled to be produced before a Jhargram court later on Tuesday. He was reportedly part of the team that removed the clips from the track.

Earlier, the West Bengal police and commandos of the elite special action force arrested four suspected members of the PCPA in connection with the attack.

Those arrested were identified as Manoranjan Mahto, Rakal Barik, Rabindra Mahto and Bhonomali Mahato.
