Patna NIT to declare 35 students not fit for education

August 14, 2011 15:47 IST

Rakesh Meena, Umesh Kumar, Prem Vikas,Anees Mohan and Sanjiv Kumar, are worried engineering students of Patna-based National Institute of Technology.

They have one thing in common -- all of them are set to be declared Not Fit for Technical Education -- after pursuing two years of their course.

This is because they could not clear all of their engineering papers despite being given them two chances in two years.

These students have already boycotted classes on Friday to protest against authorities' decision to fail them in their annual examination. They have threatened to intensify the protest from Tuesday after the institute re-opens after the Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day holidays.

U C Ray, director, NIT, Patna, confirmed that the institution will indeed issue the NFTE certificate to those students.

"The institute should be little flexible to us because it will mar our careers. We should be given another chance to prove ourselves," said Sanjiv, a mechanical engineering student.

His views were supported by Rakesh. "Yes, my credit marks and Cumulative Grade Point Average are not good. But the institute should provide us one for opportunity to improve our performance," he said.

But Umesh, another mechanical engineering student, said that institute should change its rule to judge performance of students.

"I got 6.48 of 6 CGPA grade but I got credit marks of 35 of 42.We strongly feel that our answer sheets were not properly evaluated.

Another student Abhinandan Kumar, who is tensed following institute authorities decided to issue NFTE to him, said that institute should think about the future of the students. The passing marks should be reconsidered to protect the students from taking some extreme step," he said.

On the other hand, institute officials said that about 110 students of the 2010 batch have also failed in their first semester examinations.

"They were given another chance to clear but they failed again. If they fail to clear examinations next year, they will be issued an NFTE certificate," an official said.

NIT Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology created by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development after rechristening the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering in 2004.
