Fali Nariman, Khushwant Singh among Padma Vibhushan awardees

Noted jurist Fali Nariman, well-known litterateur Khushwant Singh and former chief justice P N Bhagwati were on Thursday named for the prestigious Padma Vibhushan awards, while leading writer Javed Akhtar and telecom czar Sunil Bharti Mittal figure in the list of this year's Padma Bhushan awardees.

Leading industrialist J J Irani, Pepsi chief Indra Nooyi, Suzuki Motor Corporation chief O Suzuki, IIM (Ahmedabad) director Bakul Dholakia and well known American writer Amitav Ghosh are among 32 people chosen for the Padma Bhushan.

The list of 79 Padma Shri awardees include noted educationist Mushirul Hassan, writer Vikram Seth, rights activist Teesta Setalvad, who had taken up the cases of Gujarat riots victims, golfer Jeev Milkha Singh and chess player K Humpy.

For the third consecutive year, there was no name selected for the highest civilian award -- Bharat Ratna.

The Padma Vibhushan awards also went to Balu Sankaran (Medicine), Centre's pointsman on Kashmir N N Vohra, career diplomat Naresh Chandra, noted economist Raja J Chelliah, E C George (Scientist) and former SAIL chairman V Krishnamurthy. Noted litteratuer Raja Rao was selected for Padma Vibushan posthumously. 

Besides Mittal, other prominent among those selected for this year's Padma Bushan awards are noted academician Bhikhu Parekh (UK), well-known vocalist brother duo Rajan and Sajan Mishra, eminent social worker V Mohini Giri and Justice K T Thomas.

Among those chosen for Padma Shri are noted Bharati Natyam exponent Geeta Chandran, Nasscom chairman Kiran Karnik, noted historian and vice chancellor of Jamia Millia University Mushirul Hassan and pop singer Remo Fernandes.
