P Chidambaram's mother passes away

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's mother Lakshmi Palaniappan died on Friday. She was 92, her family said.

She was not keeping well for the past few days and died early on Friday morning, they said. Meanwhile, a host of political leaders, including former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K V Thankgabalu, visited the house of Lakshmi Palaniappan to pay their last respects.

The cremation is expected to take place on Friday evening, sources said. Expressing grief, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Sad to know about demise of Shri P Chidambaram's mother, Smt. Lakshmi Palaniappan. My condolences to the family. May her soul rest in peace".
