The issue of price rise paralysed Parliament with an agitated opposition forcing adjournment of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha for the day after repeated disruptions on Tuesday.
The Upper House called it a day soon after it assembled after Question Hour as the opposition members raised slogans protesting the spiralling prices.
P J Kurien, who was in the Chair, tried to pacify the members and asked the ministers to lay the papers listed for the day. As the din continued, he adjourned the House for the day.
Earlier, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for an hour soon after it met for the day.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day after lunch, before which it was adjourned twice.
The House adjourned for an hour minutes after it met for the day and then till 2 pm after Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal members led by Mulayam Singh Yadav and Lalu Prasad stormed the well shouting slogans denouncing the government for its "failure" to check price rise.
They chanted slogans like 'Jo Sarkar Nikammi Hai, Voh Sarkar Badalani Hai' (we have to change the government, which is incompetent)' as the Bharatiya Janata Party and other opposition members were on their feet protesting against price rise.
As the members refused to relent even after the House resumed during Zero Hour, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the Lok Sabha till 2 pm amid vociferous demands for a discussion on the issue of price rise from opposition parties and even some of those supporting the government.
In the melee, the speaker ordered laying of the papers listed for the day and asked Petroleum Minister Murli Deora to make a statement on the revision in prices of petroleum products.
Earlier, soon after Kumar read out obituary references, members of the SP and the RJD, both parties supporting the government, joined the opposition in demanding a discussion on the issue of hike in prices of kerosene and cooking gas.
Leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj said increase in prices of kerosene and LPG has disturbed the budget of the common man and the entire opposition has come together to demand a discussion on the issue.
She said a number of opposition members have submitted adjournment motions on the issue.
"Accept our adjournment motions and allow a discussion on the issue," she said pointing out that even some parties supporting the government have made common cause with the opposition.
Telugu Desam Party members were also seen in the Well raising the issue of the Babhli barrage.
With members unrelenting, the speaker adjourned the proceedings till 12 noon.
In Rajya Sabha, soon after new members took oath or affirmation, the entire Opposition was up on their feet raising the issue of price rise.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was joined by the Bahujan Samaj Party, the SP and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam vociferously raised the issue of rise in prices of essential commodities particularly domestic cooking gas LPG and PDS kerosene.
Amid the din, Shiv Sena members holding banners on the Babhli barrage issue moved towards the Well.
Chairman Hamid Ansari asked members not to show banners and resume their places so that Question Hour could be taken up. His remarks had no effect on the members who continued to raise slogans.
Ansari called leader of the opposition Arun Jaitley to speak but he could not make a statement as Opposition continued to protest, which forced the chairman to adjourn the house till 12 noon.
