An encounter broke out between the army and militants near the Line of Control on Friday in Uri sector of north Kashmir, with a militant believed to have been killed in the operation, an army official said.
Police sources informed that the encounter began in Bonyar area in Baramulla district after army launched an operation following inputs about the presence of three to four militants in the area, the official said.
He said as the army zeroed in on the hiding militants, they fired upon the forces and in the ensuing gun battle; one militant was reportedly killed while an army jawan was injured.
The body of the killed militant has not been recovered yet, the official said, adding, the operation is underway.
He said it was not immediately known whether this was an infiltration bid and added that the details will be known once the operation concludes.
