The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated the process to identify land for setting up of a co-ed inter college in the district as a tribute to the December 16 gang-rape victim who succumbed to injuries on Tuesday.

District Inspector of Schools Ramesh Kumar Singh said the parents of Nirbhaya met Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on December 24 and assured that a government inter college for girls and boys will be set up in their native Medawar Kala village under Narhi police station in the district.

The state and district administration has started the process for implementing the same, he added. Meanwhile, the district magistrate has sought the report on the identification of the land within three days of stipulated time.

On December 16, 2012, the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern was beaten and gang-raped in a private bus in which she was travelling with a male friend in Munirka, a neighbourhood in south Delhi. She succumbed to injuries on December 29 the same year.

On December 20 this year, the juvenile convict in the case was released and sent to a non-governmental organisation at an undisclosed destination.

People from all walks of life gathered in various parts of the country to protest the release of the youngest convict as the Supreme Court rejected the plea to stop the release of the juvenile offender.

Days after the juvenile convict in the ghastly 2012 gang-rape-cum-murder case walked free for lack of a legal provision, Parliament passed a bill stating that those aged 16 and above will now be tried as adults for heinous crimes such as rape.
