Obamas serve chicken samosa at White House reception

July 28, 2009 20:03 IST

United Stated President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama served chicken samosa among other mouthwatering dishes at a White House reception hosted for ambassadors including Indian envoy Meera Shankar.

Though samosa in India is a vegetarian preparation but in the West, where it has become one of the most popular Indian snacks, it is served with fillings of minced meat. But Obamas served samosas with chicken fillings with yogurt dip to his guests in White House, indicating that the fame of Indian culinary is spreading on the American soil.

The White House tryst for diplomats was a splashy affair, held under the glint of chandeliers in the Grand Foyer, replete with champagne and the music of the Marine String Ensemble. Musicians performed a handful of light jazz songs including Shadow of Your Smile and Come Back to Sorrento to light up the atmosphere.

Waiters bore trays of tequila smoked salmon on crisps, leek tartlets, petit filet mignon sandwiches, cream brulee and blueberry vanilla tartlettes.

Diplomacy has always been critically important to all nations, Obama said with Michelle Obama at his side.

In the 21st century, "we cannot solve our problems until we solve them together," Obama said. "That's one reason why I came into office with a strong commitment to renew American diplomacy and to start a new era of engagement with the world," Obama said.
