India's victorious cricket team will now have to be content with Rs 25 lakh each instead of a site in Bengaluru.
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who was quick to announce sites in Bengaluru for Team India after they lifted the World Cup, has now reversed his decision citing legal hassles.
Instead of the promised land, Yeddyurappa has announced a cash award of Rs 25 lakh each for every member of the team.
There are certain legal hassles, which prevent me from giving away sites and hence this changed decision had to be taken, he said on
What really made Yeddyurappa change his decision was a Supreme Court directive, which was brought to his notice by the authorities of the Bangalore Development Authority that had been told to make provisions for the allocation of the sites to the players.
As per the Supreme Court directive, the chief minister cannot direct any government authority to hand over sites.
The chief minister's decision to hand over sites had created a furore in Karnataka with several former players and sports personalities questioning why they were not given a similar treatment.
