A prominent Indian-American Kris Kolluri has been appointed as the commissioner of transportation in the US state of New Jersey.
The 38-year-old, Hyderabad-born Kolluri, who came to the United States in 1985, will take office upon being confirmed by the state Senate, according to a media report.
Kolluri worked on Capitol Hill as senior policy advisor to the former Democratic Minority leader Richard Gephardt.
New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is said to have had several Indian Americans in his transition team and the expectation is that he will be making more appointments like Kolluri.
New Jersey is one of the states with a large Indian American population.
Kolluri got his BA degree in Management and Marketing from Rutgers, a Masters degree from Johns Hopkins and a jurist doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington DC.
