The Karnataka high court on Wednesday adjourned to June 24 hearing of a writ petition seeking quashing of two FIRs filed against self-styled godman Nityananda Swami, arrested on criminal charges including rape.
Justice Arali Nagaraj adjourned the case on the plea of Nityananda's counsel, Vivekananda Gupta, who said it was necessary as his bail plea has been posted for tomorrow when the CID, probing the case, is also expected to submit its report.
Besides, he said, the Madras high court had stayed all criminal proceedings against Nityananda pending before a court at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu where a private complaint has been filed against the self-styled godman.
In a related development, the Ramanagara Magistrate Court extended Nityananda's judicial custody, which ended today, till June 23. Nityananda landed in trouble in March after local TV channels aired purported video footage showing him in a compromising position with a Tamil actress.
He was arrested in Solan district in Himachal Pradesh on April 21.
