Indian envoy to Nepal meets PM

October 17, 2006 23:45 IST
India's ambassador to Nepal Shiv Shanker Mukherjee on Tuesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and apprised him about the latest situation in the Himalayan country in the backdrop of failure of government there and Maoists to reach an understanding on arms management.

Mukherjee also briefed Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and National Security Adviser M K Narayanan about the developments there, official sources said.

The envoy had briefed
Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon on the situation on Monday. The visit comes in the backdrop of failure of parleys between the Maoist rebels and the ruling Seven-Party Alliance in Nepal on key issues, including arms management and the position of the King.

The talks have been indefinitely put off. Significantly, UN envoy to Nepal Ian Martin was also in New Delhi and met Menon. He is understood to have apprised the Foreign Secretary about UN plan for management of arms in Nepal.
