The relief material from India started reaching Myanmar on Wednesday, with two Indian Air Force planes and two Naval ships arriving in the cyclone-hit country with urgently required essential supplies.

India is sending another consignment of relief material by an IL-76 aircraft of IAF on Thursday to the neighbouring country, where the death toll has crossed 22,000 and is rising rapidly, revealing the extent of widespread devastation caused by the calamity.

Two AN-32 aircraft, carrying relief material including tents and medicines, reached Yangon, officials said.

Two Indian Naval ships -- INS Rana and INS Kirpan -- carrying essential relief material,  also reached Yangon port.

The relief material, including clothing, blankets, medicine and food, were handed over to the Myanmarese authorities.

"First hand report indicates massive devastation reminiscent of tsunami (that hit India in 2004)," the Defence Ministry said.

It said the ships braved very high velocity winds from 50 to 60 knots, shifting sands and other navigational hazards while navigating the channel.

"Such a fast response in the recent times has been possible due to our ships being on regular deployments in the Indian Ocean region," it said.
