Parliament will reverberate with a musical extravaganza for the second time in a month on Sunday when vocalist Pandit Jasraj, santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and lyricist Javed Akhtar perform on the occasion of National Flag Day on August 31.

Tiranga, the unique musical evening to salute the tricolour, will also have contributions from violinist L Subramanium and U Shriniwas, as the artistes interpret the three colours on the flag and Ashoka Chakra to a distinguished audience.

"It is an attempt to revive the National Flag Day on August 31, which we have long forgotten. We celebrate so many days but nobody really celebrates the essence of being Indian," Durga Jasraj, daughter of Pandit Jasraj and organiser of the event, said in New Delhi on Friday.

"We identify with tricolour and it is a proud possession. It is time we reassert the true meaning of the colours," Pandit Jasraj said. "We used to celebrate National Flag Day earlier before Independence. But after gaining freedom we stopped celebrating that," he said.

The concert in Parliament Library auditorium will feature poems by Javed Akhtar on saffron, white, green and the Ashok Chakra followed by musical renditions by the maestros.

There will also be an eight-minute documentary, produced by Art and Artistes, a Mumbai-based company, on the evolution of the tricolour, she said.
