November 28, 2008 15:53 IST

The American Jewish Council, the largest and the most influential Jewish organisation in the United States, has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, condemning the 'senseless and cowardly attacks' on Mumbai and to express its solidarity with India.

In a letter sent to Dr Singh AJC President Richard J Sideman and Executive Director David A Harris, said that it is horrified by the appalling terrorist attacks in Mumbai.  Noting that AJC is a longtime friend of India and active supporter of enhanced US-Indian cooperation, it said that AJC strongly condemns these senseless and cowardly attacks and stands in solidarity with the people and the Indian Government at this time as it has  long stood with India and its sister democracies in the struggle against hatred and violence.

'We wish to express our deepest condolences for the deaths sustained, our profound hope for the full recovery of the injured, and our outrage over the scale and brazenness of these assaults. As this tragedy is still unfolding, we understand that a number of people are being held hostage, and we join you in hoping for their safe and quick release,' it said.
