A woman driving allegedly under the influence of alcohol rammed her car into a police jeep and a bike, leaving an assistant sub-inspector and the biker dead and four constables seriously injured early on Saturday morning.
Twenty-seven year old Nooriya Haveliwala, a beautician by profession, lost control over her car and hit the police jeep and bike at Marine Drive in south Mumbai, police said. The deceased were identified as Dinanath Shinde, an assistant sub inspector with the traffic police, and biker Afzal Kanojia,
Shinde succumbed to his injuries at the Bombay Hospital while Kanojia was pronounced dead on arrival at the GT hospital. The four seriously injured traffic constables were hospitalised and the woman has been arrested, Anil Takalkar,ACP (Traffic) said.
"Medical tests on the woman, a resident of Colaba in South Mumbai, confirmed presence of alcohol in her blood," a senior police official said. She has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing grievous hurt and rash and negligent driving, he said.
