In line with his plan for a complete makeover of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, the party general secretary and son of chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, on Tuesday expelled a functionary for indulging in vandalism and showing black flags to Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi in Aligarh earlier in the day.

"I was constrained to take the decision to expel district general secretary in Aligarh because he defied the party's clear cut instructions to desist from disrupting any political function of a rival party leader. When I learnt that the Aligarh district Samajwadi Party chief Dinesh Yadav had led a group of party men to disrupt Rahul Gandhi's visit to Aligarh where they also staged a black-flag demonstration against him, I had to take action," Akhilesh told rediff.com.

"I
have expelled Dinesh Yadav for his failure to abide by the basic norms set by the party," he added.

The move is seen as a subtle retort to Bahujan Samaj Party President and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's oft-repeated claim that hers was the only party, which acted against leaders who were found indulging in unlawful acts.
