Nearly 600 people turned up on Tuesday morning to offer prayers at the Bhojshala complex in Dhar district after the Archaeological Survey of India ordered the Madhya Pradesh government to open the site to Hindus every Tuesday.

The devotees, some of whom were beating drums, entered the shrine at 0900 IST, official sources said.

As per the ASI's orders, which came on Monday, the Bhojshala was to be opened at 1100 IST, but it was opened two hours before schedule, the sources said.

Dhar District Collector Sanjay Dubey said around 600 people visited the site and there was no untoward incident.

A spokesman of the local Hindu Jagran Manch unit Vishal Goyal announced that the day would be observed as Diwali in Dhar, with lamps being lighted in every house in the evening.
