MP submits his Lokpal Bill in Parliament

August 08, 2011 23:33 IST

Anna Hazare and his team may not have managed to see introduction of their version of Lokpal Bill in Parliament, but an Independent MP on Monday submitted in Rajya Sabha a Private Member's Jan Lokpal Bill aimed at checking corruption.

"Rajeev Chandrasekhar submitted for introduction in Parliament a Private Member's Bill to provide for the establishment of an independent authority namely the Lokpal to investigate offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988," office of the independent MP said in a statement.

The proposed law aims, among other things, to detect corruption by expeditious investigation, prosecute offenders and to ensure timely redressal of certain types of public grievances and provide protection to whistleblowers.

The title of this private member's bill is The Jan Lokpal Bill, 2011. The Bill will now be processed by secretary general of Rajya Sabha as he is a member of the Upper House. The Lokpal Bill, 2011 has already been introduced in Parliament. It was sent to the standing committee on law, justice, personnel and public grievances.

With a bill for establishing an ombudsman already in Parliament, Chandrasekhar's Bill is likely to be rejected.
