Uproar over a member's alleged harassment by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's security personnel in Parliament precincts forced the adjournment of the Lok Sabha for nearly two hours on Wednesday.

Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party members rushed into the Well as soon the House reassembled at noon after an earlier adjournment, demanding action against the Special Protection Group personnel responsible for the incident, in which BSP MP Rama Shankar Rajbhar was allegedly manhandled.

"In the name of providing security to the prime minister, Members of Parliament are being insulted day in and day out. It is an insult to this august House," BSP leader Dara Singh Chauhan said and demanded a thorough probe into the matter and action against those found guilty.

Deputy Speaker Karia Munda, after hearing Chauhan, said he would bring the matter to the notice of Speaker Meira Kumar.

Slogan-shouting Left and Telugu Desam Party members, carrying placards, were also in the Well demanding a debate on the agrarian crisis and the plight of farmers.

United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi was seen talking to the agitated BSP members. Senior ministers P K Bansal and Harish Rawat urged them to return to their seats.

As the din continued, Munda adjourned the House till 2 pm after ordering the laying of papers and allowing introduction of a bill to set up the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development.

Earlier, when the House met for the day, Left and TDP members were in the Well demanding discussion on the agrarian crisis and plight of farmers.

They were also demanding universalisation of the public distribution system, implementation of the Swaminathan Committee's recommendations on the agrarian sector and minimum support price for cotton growers.

The slogan shouting continued for sometime as the Speaker went ahead with the Question Hour. When the protests became shrill, Kumar stood up and asked members to return to their seats and show some courtesy to the Chair.

The Left and TDP members remained in the Well despite repeated requests by the Speaker to return to their seats.

Angered over their unruly behaviour, Kumar adjourned the House till noon.
