Amar Jyoti Kalita, the prime accused in the molestation of a girl on the streets of Guwahati on July 9, was on Wednesday brought back to the city from Varanasi, where he was caught by a Special Investigation Team of the Assam police.
The police team and Kalita reached Guwahati in a flight from Kolkata at around 6 pm on Wednesday evening.
Tight security arrangements were made at the airport, official sources said.
Superintendent of police (Operations) Ranjan Bhuniya, who led the Assam police team to Varanasi, told newsmen at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport that a five-day transit warrant had been secured from the Varanasi Chief Judicial Magistrate court and based Kalita has been brought to Guwahati.
Kamrup Metro Senior Superintendent of Police A K Tiwari said Kalita is likely to be produced in court on Wednesday or Thursday.
"If there is time, we will produce him before the court today. Or else, it will be done tomorrow," Tiwari said.
Kalita, a former government employee who was absconding since the incident, was held at Varanasi on July 23 by the Uttar Pradesh police. With his arrest, 14 of the 17 identified accused in the incident have been taken into custody.
Of the 14 in custody, 8 -- including Gaurav Jyoti Neog who filmed the incident -- have been remanded to judicial custody.
