New SP Gen Secy Mohan Singh says Amar must quit RS

Last updated on: January 27, 2010 19:49 IST

Samajwadi Party on Wednesday appointed Mohan Singh as its general secretary and spokesman in place of Amar Singh and he lost no time in demanding the resignation of the dissenting leader from Rajya Sabha on moral grounds.

Mohan Singh, who was appointed by party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, told mediapersons, "Since Amar Singh has resigned as party's general secretary, member of parliamentary board and as spokesperson, he has already detached himself from the party."

"Rajya Sabha membership is given by the party and, therefore, he should resign from Rajya Sabha also," he said.

Taking a dig at the SP chief, Amar Singh said he (Mulayam) has kept his word of moving ahead by appointing Mohan Singh as new party spokesman and leaving an 'ill' person like him behind for the sake of power.

"After accepting my resignation from key party posts, Mulayam Singh Yadav had said he wants to look ahead. He has done so by appointing Mohan Singh as party's spokesman and by also including him in the SP parliamentary board. He has kept his word of moving ahead and leaving behind an ill person like me to embrace power," Singh, who turned 54 today, told mediapersons in New Delhi.

He had recently quit all party posts over differences with relatives of the SP chief.

Yadav appointed three new party general secretaries in place of Amar Singh, Obaidullah Azmi and Sanjay Dutt. Besides Mohan Singh, the two other general secretaries are Vishambhar Prasad Nishad and Ramasare Kushwaha.
