Modi takes a dig at Rahul on 'hero' remark

April 18, 2011 18:19 IST

In a veiled attack on Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that 'criticising leader like Anna Hazare is improper and an insult to him'.

Modi, without naming Rahul, said 'working for people's right is our duty and Hazare is not trying to become a hero by launching such a campaign'.

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi in a letter to Justice Krishna Iyer had said, "I am trying to end corruption but I have no interest in becoming a hero."

The Gandhian had gone on a hunger strike to press for a stronger anti-corruption bill and forced the government to form a joint

committee to formulate a legislation.

After laying the foundation stone of a branch canal of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNL) at Morbi, Modi said "Anna Hazare has been fighting for peoples' right and some people are targeting him for praising Gujarat over development.

Accusing the Centre of 'putting spanner' in "development" work being carried out by his government,
Modi said, "The state government is committed to completing various projects despite non-cooperation from the Union government. Gujarat does not receive any benefits like other states and the Union government is creating hurdles in completion of numerous projects."
