Modi to visit Delhi college today, likely to face protest

Last updated on: February 06, 2013 00:49 IST

Student groups on Facebook are garnering support for a proposed protest against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who is scheduled to deliver the annual ‘Shri Ram Memorial Oration' as part of Shri Ram College of Commerce's management festival 'Business Conclave 2013' on Wednesday. The topic of his discourse is ‘Emerging Business Models in the Global Scenario’.

Modi is visiting the college on an invitation extended by SRCC Students Union, says the FB post. The groups calling for the protest has said that it intends to stage a peaceful protest outside SRCC at the time of his oration ‘for his refusal to apologise for the Gujarat carnage and the horrible treatment and repression that minorities in Gujarat have been subjected to since 2002’.

Around 752 invitations have been sent out so far and about 156 have already confirmed to attend the protest. The ‘event’ on Facebook has been generating a lot of interest with netizens posting their feedback and comments.

A post by Pranshu Prakash reads, ‘…We are much disturbed to see that the red carpet is being extended to the man responsible for the 2002 carnage in which thousands perished. Being feted by the right wing forces as the ‘Vikas Purush’, attempts are being made to project him as the prime-ministerial candidate for the next general elections…’

Another post on Anshul Kumar Pandey's timeline reads, ‘Modi's sycophants just invaded my Facebook timeline calling me a paid agent of congress, a psuedo-secular dog etc. etc. Changed my privacy settings and deleted their comments...'

The invite on FB, however, says that the protest plan is still tentative and will be confirmed on the page after getting the necessary permission from the appropriate authorities.
