Mirwaiz Umar Farooq detained on way to Shopian

All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq was on Tuesday afternoon detained by police outside the headquarters of the conglomerate in Srinagar while on he was on his way to curfew-bound Shopian town in south Kashmir. 

Meanwhile, curfew continued in Shopian district for the 11th consecutive day today, leading to acute shortages of essential commodities for its residents. 

Earlier, Mirwaiz chaired a meeting of the separatist conglomerate at uptown Rajbagh, where it was decided that APHC leaders will visit Shopian to express solidarity with the residents. 

"There is acute shortage of essential commodities in the town. We have decided to visit Shopian to understand the plight of the people," Mirwaiz said.

But as soon as he stepped out of the APHC headquarters, a posse of Jammu and Kashmir police detained him, along with his supporters.

Mirwaiz was then taken to his residence in Nageen and placed under house arrest.

The Mirwaiz had been placed under house arrest last week as well, following the killing of four youth in firing by Central Reserve Police Force personnel in Shopian.

Another person had been killed during the protests against the killing of the four youth.

The state government has already ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and ordered the relocation of the CRPF camp from Gagran village.
