February 19, 2012 22:43 IST

A 20-year-old youngster was gunned down by unidentified militants in the Arampora locality of the north Kashmir Sopore town on Sunday evening.

A senior police officer said militants fired pistol rounds from a close range at Umar Rasool, a scooter mechanic.

"Umar was immediately taken to hospital where he succumbed," the officer said.

Police rushed to the spot and the area was searched.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the killing. Another youth had escaped unhurt in the town few days back when militants fired at him.

In a separate incident, militants hurled a powerful hand grenade at a police station in the old city. Police said the grenade exploded without causing any damage at Zadibal.
