A special police officer (SPO) and a civilian were killed and four others wounded in a militant ambush in north Kashmir Sopore town Tuesday evening.

A senior police officer said militants fired indiscriminately at a police party near the new bus stand in Sopore town, 54 km from Srinagar, resulting in the death of an SPO and a civilian.

"Four other persons including an SPO were wounded in the militant attack. The injured were evacuated to hospital for treatment," the officer said.

He said the area was cordoned off by the security forces for searches. The incident triggered tension in the bustling market area in the town as people ran for security.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack which came hours after militants attacked a posse of paramilitary central reserve police force (CRPF) in the city centre Lal Chowk this morning that left a civilian dead and four other persons including two CRPF jawans wounded.

Authorities have sounded a general alert across Kashmir following Tuesday's attacks in capital Srinagar and Sopore town.
