Militant killed in encounter in Kashmir

A local militant was killed on Saturday in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district, about 35 kms from Srinagar, police said.

A senior police officer said troops of counter insurgency, Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group of the state police jointly surrounded Gondipora village in Pulwama district this afternoon on specific information about presence of militants in the village.

The gun battle started when security forces came under attack from a house in Gundipora village where they had gone to carry out a search operation following information about presence of militants, police said.

“An encounter is on in the village. More reinforcements have been rushed to the area which has been surrounded by the security forces,” the officer said.

Senior army and police officers have rushed to the area.

One militant, believed to be a local, was killed in the gun battle, police said.
