A local militant was killed while a jawan received minor injuries in a day-long gunfight with security forces in Awantipora area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir on Wednesday.

"One militant has been killed and his body has been recovered while searches are on for his associates, if any," Superintendent of Police (Awantipora) Mohammad Irshad told PTI.

Army and the police cordoned off Dadsar village in Awantipora, 30 km from Srinagar, on Tuesday night following information about the presence of militants in the area. The shootout began between the militants hiding in the house of one Ghulam Mohammad Mir and the security forces at approximately 10 am, sources said.

As the militants put up a stiff resistance, the security forces blasted the house on Wednesday evening, after which the hostile firing stopped, sources said.

The deceased militant has been identified as Shabir Ahmad, a resident of nearby Tral area. Sources said a jawan sustained minor injuries during the operation.
