Several policemen were injured on Friday in a clash with prisoners in Meerut Jail during a random search following a report about the use of mobile phones from inside the premises.

A jail official was suspended after the incident, in which police have seized a number of mobile phones, CDs and a huge amount of money, a senior police official said.

Raids were carried out by a police team after a report from the superintendent of police (city) that he had seized a mobile phone from inside the barrack of an inmate on Wednesday.

Agra DIG Kamal Saxena, who led the raiding party, told reporters that Meerut Police 'instigated the inmates to attack' them.

"Two-three officers are injured in the melee. We came here on the orders of the government. (But) the Meerut police told the inmates that we are with you and the trouble started," he said. "The jail superintendent and deputy superintendent are responsible for it."

Senior Superintendent of Police (Agra) Amrish Gaur, who was part of the raiding party, said the prisoners attacked the police team when they tried to seize the illegal articles.

Some of the prisoners who were involved in the attack were identified, said Senior Superintendent of Police (Meerut) Deepesh Juneja.
