The Delhi government on Monday ordered a magisterial inquiry into last night's clash between locals and police in an east Delhi locality in which one person was killed.

"A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the clashes in which one person died. The reasons behind the clashes will be known in the inquiry," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said.

The clash erupted in Mayur Vihar Phase-III at around 7.30 pm following rumours that a youth died after an accident at a vehicle checking picket. Around 20 people, including over a dozen policemen, were also injured when the mob and police clashed after police tried to stop them.

The violence came an hour after the man, who the police claimed was drunk, fell from his two-wheeler at a vehicle checking picket when he was signalled to stop for not wearing a helmet. The police have detained over 20 people for questioning in connection with the case.
