A major fire broke out on Sunday night at the Deonar dumping yard, which had recently battled a massive blaze that led to smog in the area.

The blaze broke out on Sunday in the afternoon and fire tenders were rushed to contain the fire, a fire brigade official said.

"Flames and smoke emerged from three new spots and were spread across more than five acres of area towards Vashi creek. Fire brigade jawans had controlled the fire but thick smoke was seen," he said.

It took five hours for the fire fighters to bring the fire under control which might have occurred due to methane (gas) present under the heaps of garbage, the official said.

"Many parts of the ground are not accessible due to unplanned dumping which puts us in trouble while dousing the fire," he said.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ajoy Mehta was apprised by fire officials about the incident after which he directed senior officials to reach the spot and personally monitor the operations. The blaze was subsequently brought under control.

A major blaze had broken out at the city's biggest dumping yard, spread across 326 acres, on January 27 and took fire brigade more than a week to douse it. It had created a thick blanket of smog across the entire vicinity which gave residents breathing problems.
