Maoists have abducted 88 people in 2012 alone!

Abductions by Maoists in India have become quite a routine affair today. Union ministry of home affairs statistics indicate that in 2012 alone 88 persons have been abducted by the left wing extremists, and 11 have been killed.

Replying to a query by Member of Parliament Rajeev Chandrashekhar, the home ministry provided the following details. In 2009, 380 persons were abducted out of which 93 were killed. In 2010, there were 490 abductions and 113 were killed. The statistics for 2011 reveal that 329 persons were abducted and 64 were killed.

The abductions by the Maoists have been the highest in the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Jharkhand has seen 31 abductions and 2 deaths so far this year, while in 2009, 2010 and 2011, 90 (13 dead), 100 (6 dead) and 85 (11 dead) have been abducted, respectively.

In the case of Chhattisgarh these are the statistics: in 2012 there were 29 abductions and 3 deaths. In 2009 there were 121 abductions and 33 deaths, while in 2010 there were 161 abductions and 36 deaths. In 2011 the number of abductions was 85 and 11
deaths.

In the case of West Bengal, the year 2012 has seen no abductions so far. In 2009 there were 65 abductions and 3 deaths while in 2010 and 2011, there were 74 abductions (59 deaths) and 21 abductions (13 deaths), respectively.

Bihar this year has seen 9 abductions and 2 deaths while in the 2011 it witnessed 87 abductions and 3 deaths. In 2009 and 2010, the number of abductions were 25 (8 deaths) and 75 (5 deaths) respectively.

Andhra Pradesh has not recorded too many incidents. Only one person was abducted in 2012 while between 2009 and 2011 there were 24 abductions and 4 deaths.

Maharashtra between 2009 and 2012 saw 65 abductions and 11 deaths.

In Odisha there were 146 abductions and 15 deaths between 2009 and 2012. Uttar Pradesh saw just one abduction between 2009 and 2012 (in the year 2009) and no deaths.

In Madhya Pradesh not a single incident has been reported in the past four years while in Karnataka there has been just one incident of abduction and one death in 2011.
