A group of heavily-armed insurgents on Friday ambushed Manipur's Agriculture Minister K Ranjit and Deputy Inspector General of Police Jathang at Tingkhanphai in Chandel district bordering Myanmar, official sources said.

Casualties, if any, were not known immediately, they said.

The insurgents opened fire at the police convoy accompanying Ranjit and Jathang when they were returning to Imphal after attending a function.

The police guards returned the fire. It was not known whether Ranjit and Jathang were injured in the attack.
