West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Akash Banerjee, who was arrested for assaulting a traffic police official, was produced before Alipore Session Court in Kolkata on Thursday.

Akash and his two friends were stopped for violating traffic rules on Wednesday.

When the traffic policeman asked the car to stop for violating traffic rules, one of the three occupants started abusing him, saying he was the chief minister's nephew and that the police was not doing its duty.

He pushed the policeman and assaulted him. Police rushed to the spot and arrested the three accused. He has been charged with a non-bailable offence for assault on a police officer on duty.

Mamata Banerjee is currently facing flak over her recent statements on rape cases in the state.
