Emotional scenes were witnessed at the domestic airport in New Delhi as mortal remains of Major D Raghuraman, who was killed in a gun battle with militants in North Kashmir on Wednesday, were flown to the capital on Thursday.

With tear-filled eyes, Raghuraman's father Krishnamurthy, sister and other family members along with army personnel received the coffin draped in tricolour.

Krishnamurthy, himself an ex-serviceman, said he was 'very much proud' of his son who sacrificed his life for the nation.

"I am his father. I am an ex-serviceman. I feel proud for my son who laid down his life for the soil," he said.

The mortal remains of Raghuraman will be consigned to flames at the Brar crematorium on Friday.

Raghuraman was shot while attempting to rescue his colleague Major Vinay, leading the army onslaught on Wednesday in Baramulla.

Nine militants were also killed in the gun battle.

The body of Vinay has been sent to Hyderabad, his native place, by flight.
